Shredder security level refers to the level of paper destruction and is measured on seven levels: P-1 to P-7. Level P-1 produces the largest particles after shredding and level P-7 produces the smallest particles after shredding. A higher shredder security level is recommended for highly sensitive or confidential documents, while a lower shredder security level is recommended for general shredding purposes.

Shredder overload protection, or thermal overload protection, is a feature in which the shredder will shut down for a cooling period to prevent damage and overheating in the event the motor exceeds its duty cycle and becomes too warm.
